Hello! The big ride is almost here!!! As
some of you know about 3 and a half years ago I took up cycling. The
reason for this was to complete an idea I had when I was 18. To ride
from Land’s End to John O’Groats (in cycling parlance LEJOG). For the
last three years I have been busy pounding the roads of Norfolk, Suffolk
and Cambridgeshire in preparation for this big adventure. Well it’s
almost upon me and in just over a months’ time I will be making my way
to Cornwall for my Grand Départ. I will be part of an organised tour
leaving Land’s End on August 12th and arriving in John O’Groats on
August 24th. The proposed route we will be following is a distance of
979 miles. Although I am sure that with the inevitable road detours,
getting lost and a quick visit to the UK mainland’s most northerly
point, Dunnet Head, the total number will exceed 1000 miles!
As part of my journey to the UK’s most northerly town I will be raising money for Macmillan. Why Macmillan? Not long after I started cycling, my Mum was diagnosed with terminal cancer. Sadly, despite all the research sometimes science can’t save a life. Upon hearing such devastating news having people around you that can support and guide you through those last few weeks is invaluable. I take my hat off to the staff of Macmillan who, everyday, help those that are near the end of their life. Certainly not a job for everyone. Putting all this together, one of Mum’s wishes was to raise money for charity during one of my long rides. As I am not one for asking people to donate, I have decided to save my asking for my biggest ride. If you would like to donate a few pounds to a very worthy organisation I will really appreciate it :)
